The backstrip is decorated like the cover. The gilt on the backstrip is slightly darkened. There is fraying and chipping on the upper backstrip cloth. The back cover is decorated with a couple soil spots. The endpapers are yellow with a penciled notation on the left endpaper. There is foxing on the title page and a red decorative border that is continued throughout the book. There is an illustration of Lord Lytton on the frontispiece. The lower right page corners are bent from page 159-208. The pages are crisp and white with mild tanning throughout. There is heavy foxing on the last few pages. The hinge may be near cracked at the back cover and it feels fragile.
