The book covers are beige with blue and purple speckles. Some of the cover corners bend downward. The covers are painted paper on a somewhat hard-backing. There are antique paper labels on the backstrip with script. The backstrips are heavily tanned with rubbed areas. There are a couple darker brown spots on the backstrip of Volume 1. The back covers match the front covers and are good.

Volume 1: There is a blemish on the backstrip / cover connection where the paper is splitting (~1 inch). The endpapers are heavily tanned. The interior pages are lightly textured with mild tanning throughout. 416 pages. Volume 2: There is a small area of paper pulling upward at the upper cover / backstrip connection. The title page is more heavily tanned. The interior pages are soft and white with an occasional small foxing spot. 368 pages. Volume 3: There is a soil spot in the margin of the upper title page. There is more moderate tanning and foxing in some sections of the book. 316 pages. Volume 4: The interior pages are moderately tanned with foxing throughout. 384 pages.
