Because of the large chip of the cloth on the bottom of the backstrip, the hinge at the endpapers feels somewhat fragile or unsteady. There is an illustration of the author on the frontispiece. The outer edge of the pages are gilded. The book contains beautiful steel engraving illustrations in black and white. The pages are stiff with mild tanning throughout. The Chapters have illustrated chapter headers. There are a few foxing spots on the last few pages.
