The title block on the cover is rubbed. The upper and lower backstrip is shabby and cloth is split and frayed. The back cover is embossed to look like the cover with “Milton”. The right brown endpaper is missing. The book opens to the first pre-title page that has heavy foxing. The first title page is decorated with a dramatic black and white illustration. There is a detail illustration of a young boy opposite. There is no copyright page. The outer edge of the interior pages are gilded on three-sides. The book has several full page black and white illustrations and decorative section headers. The font (print size) is very small throughout. The rear endpapers are brown and good. 460 pages.
