The cover has marbled decoration in colors tan, brown and green. The cover corners are leather capped. The backstrip is decorative light brown leather with a black title block. The back cover has similar decoration to the front cover. The upper left leather corner on the back cover is discolored. The covers curve upward in the middle slightly. There are large rubbed areas on the marbling on the front and back covers. The endpapers are white with a lengthy pencil writing on the right endpaper. There are pencil notations that can likely be erased, if possible, prior to shipping. There is a penned signature of a former owner lightly on the upper edge of the title page. The title page is moderately tanned. There is a detailed illustration of the author on the frontispiece. There is a 2-inch rub on the left side of page 2.

The interior pages are soft and intact with mild tanning throughout and an occasional small foxing spot. There is light foxing on upper edge of illustration on page 19. There is darker foxing along the very edge of engraving at page 88. There is larger light brown foxing spots on the lower margin of page 114-115. There is larger light brown foxing spots on the white margin on an illustration, page 117. There are darker foxing spots along lower margin of an engraving, page 152. This margin foxing continues on of the engraving illustrations. The outer edge of page 182 is rough and the rough edge is visible from outside the book (pictured). There is very heavy foxing on the engraving at page 189. The upper right paper corner is missing on pages 612-614. The back endpapers are white with mild to moderate foxing.
