The volumes are wrapped in beautiful white vellum with yellow undertones. There is beautiful script on the upper backstrip. The backstrips are darkened / soiled. Some of the covers have light soiling / gray areas. Volume 1: The cover has dark black spots / soiling. There is a beautiful detailed black and white image of women and angel prior to the title page. The title page is mildly tanned with foxing / tanning along the outer edge. There is a large decorative pull-out map in the "preface" area. There is a detailed black and white pull-out image of war at page 132, 242 and 370. The interior pages are mostly white with mild tanning throughout and occasional foxing. There is a moisture stain on the last page. 450 pages.
Volume 2: The interior pages are white with moderate tanning and foxing out the outer edge. There is a large pull out map near the front of the book. There are also a few pull out larger black and white images. 406 pages. Volume 3: The interior pages are more moderately tanned with sections of heavier foxing throughout. There are pull-out illustrations. Volume 4: The interior pages are moderately tanned throughout with some areas of light foxing. There are a few pull-out illustrations. 508 pages.
